Throughout March 2024, we’ve been celebrating the remarkable anniversaries of three of our esteemed team members; Jack Hodson, Sharon Evans and Rebecca Hilton.

Jack started with us in 2014 and began a journey that intertwined his passion for construction with his keen analytical mindset. Sharon began her journey with WJL as a Financial Controller back in 2012 and was appointed as the Finance Director in 2019 by Jamie Lovatt, which was a great recognition of her talent and dedication to the business. Rebecca has just hit her 1 year anniversary with WJL after building up her knowledge for 6 years as a Subcontractor Clerk Apprentice.

Reflecting on their journeys thus far, it’s evident that each of them has left an indelible mark on our company. No matter the length of your career at WJL, we believe every employee plays a vital role in shaping our success and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

What steps lead you to your current role at WJL?

JH: Initially, I started as an on site Apprentice Carpenter for a property development company. Once I completed my apprenticeship I realised that I had an analytical mindset and became interested in how a project was managed from start to finish. I decided that I would like an estimating (or quantity surveying) role and came across WJL. Nothing to do with being in a nice warm office!
SE: I joined the company in 2012, originally employed as the Financial Controller – it had a great atmosphere with lovely people, I knew that this was the right move for me and I haven’t looked back!
RH: I started out as a Subcontractor Clerk Apprentice and built up my experience and knowledge for 6 years. Wanting a new challenge and to expand on my knowledge, I joined the Finance department at WJL and have enjoyed my 1st year here.

What changes have you witnessed in the industry during your time at WJL?

JH: In the past ten years I have noticed a large shift in technology from communication (such as Microsoft Teams) to manufacturing – when I started at WJL our joinery shop was still setting out on the floor to full scale with hardboard and a pencil! Today we utilise AutoCAD software and CNC machinery.
SE: WJL have always prided themselves on process and controls internally and externally, and this has evolved even more over the years to ensure that all of the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed at every stage.

Sharon Evans

What excites you about the future of WJL and the construction industry?

JH: I am excited to be involved with the future growth ambitions of WJL and to lead our team of estimators onto securing a pipeline to enable us to do so.
SE: We have a great team that is constantly growing, the order book is healthy and we are now attracting more new customers, due to the types of work that we can offer.
RH: I’m looking forward to the exciting upcoming projects WJL has lined up!

Rebecca Hilton

What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

JH: Learning is continuous and communication is crucial, what we are asked for is constantly evolving with new technologies, materials and regulations.
SE: Never assume, and I remind myself of this every day. Try not to take things too personal, and tomorrow is another day.
RH: Not to take things personally and always ask for support when needed.

What advice would you give to newcomers entering the construction industry?

JH: Don’t be afraid to jump in at the deep end, anybody who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
SE: Strong relationships with your customers, suppliers, subcontractors and your team. Construction is very challenging, you have good days and bad days, but when you see the finished products installed, you have a sense of pride knowing that we did that!
RH: The construction industry can be challenging but seeing the end result is so fulfilling.

Each member of our team brings unique skills, perspectives, and experiences to the table, adding to our collective knowledge which drives us forward. Whether you’re a seasoned professional like Jack, who has spent a decade refining his craft and pushing boundaries in construction, a financial expert like Sharon, who has been contributing to the future of the business from the very beginning, or a newcomer like Rebecca, whose fresh perspective and eagerness to learn have injected new energy into our projects; every individual plays a vital role in shaping our success.

As we celebrate these remarkable anniversaries at WJL Contracts, we are grateful for their dedication, leadership, and invaluable contributions to our organisation. Do you have a construction project we can help with? Get in touch with a member of our team today.
