Our Contracts Fire Door Installation Manager Iain Ward recently completed a bike ride from London to France in aid of JOCA (Just One Click Away), a charity who promotes mental well-being across the rugby community. Him and his team have managed to raise an impressive £5000 for the charity, with an additional £1000 in gift aid!

The ride was completed over 4 consecutive days:

  • Day 1 – West Byfleet to Newhaven – 65 miles
  • Day 2 – Dieppe to Caen – 105 miles
  • Day 3 – Caen to Laval – 100 miles (and climbing 6000 ft!)
  • Day 4 – Laval to Nantes – 95 miles

Iain had a few challenges along the way, including having to retrace the previous couple of miles as the road chosen did not exist, battling 28 degree heat along with tiredness, working through the daily pain barrier of aching muscles and limbs, and cycling into headwinds – particularly down the Seine on the way into Honfleur.

He also mentioned “getting up and choosing whether or not to crash so that you could spend the day recovering in the support vehicle was a challenge!”

Despite these challenges, Iain managed to complete the ride in good time and enjoy the journey along the way. His favourite moments included the camaraderie within the group, the beautiful scenery, and the fact the team could see the funds raised increase on a daily basis throughout the ride, giving them a much needed boost of motivation and a reminder of the brilliant charity they were raising money for.

More positives from the journey included “downhills”, no mechanical issues or punctures for anyone, and “finishing each day!”

“I have pretty much recovered now, the primary issue for me was my quads… These were sore for about 4 days after the ride and probably need a very good massage to get them back to normal.”

“Thankfully, I was training as much as possible during the 8 weeks leading up to the ride, without this there is no way I would have completed the event!”

The money raised from this ride supports a charity established after the devastating loss of three young players at Welwyn Rugby Club due to suicide. JOCA is committed to advocating for mental health support and overall well-being for every club member.

“Aaron ‘Tiff’ Bugden was one of these lads who we (the riders) went to university with and was a much loved member of the rugby fraternity. After university, Tiff went on to be a solid member of Welwyn rugby club.”

A huge well done and congratulations to Iain and the team, and thank you to everyone who donated and helped them exceed their fundraising goal. There is still time to donate if you wish to do so: https://www.justgiving.com/page/tourdetifftock?utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=page%2Ftourdetifftock&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=pfp-share.
